Rubber dam, which appeared in 1950s, is a new type of low water-blocking structure. With high-strength synthetic fabrics as its mechanical framework and with both sides of the fabrics vulcanized by chloroprene rubber for water and air tightness layer, rubber dam is reverted on the river base board and pier walls at both ends. The air and water tight tank, after being filled with air or water, makes a flexible water-blocking body.

Compared with dams made of other material such as stone, steel, wood and concrete, rubber dam has two striking characteristics. On one hand, the inflated rubber dam can block water but not leak. When rubber dam is empty or discharged, the dam bladder is flat and tight to the river bed to discharge water, silt, stones and floats. The height of water-filling dam is adjustable, so that the upper-stream water level and flood discharge can be well controlled. On the other hand, its single span is large. According to theoretical analysis, internal and outer pressures on the dam bladder are both vertical to the dam axle line. Therefore, its length has no influence up on the pressure. Its length depends on factors as its operation, transportation and
